Smoke Grenades - Use/Safety Protocol

Post by VegasX »

I've had questions of safety and use for the Enola Gaye smoke grenades for this weekends event, so John asked me to brief everyone on proper use of the grenades.

Although these are a cold burning smoke, and the safest product of its kind on the market, it is still considered a pyrotechnic device and there are always associated risks. (just like everything in this sport) No matter how minimal these risks may be, we still need to use our heads and not do anything careless so we can ensure that smoke is allowed at future LC events. We also need to keep in mind above anything else, AO and player safety. Do not throw these into a vehicle at any time!!! Smoke should not be thrown AT a player(s). Chances of fire are pretty much non existent, but again, they are a pyrotechnic device and you need to exercise caution when using them. Throw them in areas that are free of dry brush/grass/debris etc... Contact with the grenade itself is not going to cause a fire, however if foreign material gets INSIDE the grenade during its burn cycle, you could potentially be creating a new fuse for the grenade. After pulling the ring, DO NOT throw the grenade until AFTER the fuse has burnt. You will begin to see colored smoke emitting from the top of the grenade, and at that point the smoke is safe to throw. Once the fuse is burnt, the duration of the burn is internal.

Spent smoke grenade casings are biodegradable. However, we do ask that you make an effort to pick up spent casings if you see them, and dispose of them in a trash bin. Roughly 2-5 minutes after the grenade is done burning (depending on color) the grenade will be warm to the touch, so keep that in mind when you are picking up spent casings. They are not hot enough to burn the skin, but will be warm.

Please view the diagrams below for further instructions. Any other questions, please feel free to ask us at the booth. We'll be there bright and early Friday all day until registration and chrono closes.
